"The Person Behind the Author"

Thanks, Miss Mae, for inviting me to share some of my personal foibles and traits. Many times folks online know all about our writing, our opinion of books, and see our promos, but they don't ever learn about the real person behind the words.

I'm a wife, mother, daughter, and grandmother. Like most everyone, I have lots to do and not enough time to do it.  I love Dr. Pepper (not Diet), Hershey's Chocolate, and very aromatic coffee. My very favorite gifts to receive are a box of Pot of Gold Chocolates or something handmade. My favorite place to be is the beach in the off-season when it is quiet and cool. The salt air is like a tonic to me and makes me feel like a kid again. I enjoy cooking and crafts, particularly crocheting, but seldom have time for the crafts anymore while the cooking is a necessity.

Some quirky things about me are that I like to paint my toenails weird colors, I wear funny-looking socks in the winter, and I never wear a hat unless the temperature drops below ten degrees. My pet peeves are rudeness, those who make cruel fun of others, and family members who sneak bites from my plate (I'll gladly share, but ask). I detest seeing people leave a restroom without washing their hands, scratching private areas in public, or have someone talking loudly (or cursing) into a cell phone nearby.

I love animals and have always had an affinity with them, though I am now allergic to most. I once had a huge Tom Turkey do a mating dance for me when we visited a farm to buy a goat. The poor farmer was speechless. I thought it was sweet. When we visited a second time, the same thing happened. The poor turkey followed me all the way to our truck. Until I was in my thirties I owned and rode quarter horses. I miss caring for them terribly.

I have vowed not to grow old gracefully. I will go gray kicking and screaming all the way and refuse to let myself get old (at least in my mind). My Hubby will attest to that, as I still sit in the floor and play with my grands, pull childish pranks, and on many occasions I see the world with child-like, naive eyes believing there is good in everyone.

Hi, Rebecca--I love knowing more about you. As authors, aren't we a curious, nosy group? I am, for sure. If I can't picture a person, there's no telling what I'll conjure up--so now, for the elusive Rebecca, I have a picture! Thanks for sharing a little bit of yourself--Celia

Hi Celia,
Thanks so much for stopping by. In this new internet world we live and work in, it is hard to know just how much of oneself to put "out there." I too love learning more about my online friends. Though we may never meet in person, it is so wonderful to have a large world-wide community of friends.

Hi Rebecca,
I loved your blog. What an interesting fun life you have. I love the turkey dance. LOL. I can relate to lots of what you said, especially the part about not letting yourself get old in your mind. If they just took away the mirrors, I could deceive myself quite easily. A person I admire very much had heard someone being rude. After the offender left, he said, "There's never a good reason to be rude." He emphasized the word "good." He's so right.

Rebecca, you made a lasting impression on that Tom Turkey. He probably grieved for the rest of his life. LOL.

You are still elusive; unlike Celia I don't buy this pic of you. You are much prettier inside and out. Not to mention talented, and soft-hearted to a fault.

I'm with you on "growing old." My sister once sent me a birthday card portraying the grim reaper dragging a woman by the hair, up (and eventually) over the hill. She's clawing the ground, clutching a root, and screaming, "H_ _ _ no! I won't go!"

I loved the line that if there were no mirrors I could deceive myself quite easily! That is the most true statement I've read in years - at least for me, it is. And when you wrote "I have vowed not to grow old gracefully. I will go gray kicking and screaming all the way and refuse to let myself get old (at least in my mind). My Hubby will attest to that, as I still sit in the floor and play with my grands, pull childish pranks, and on many occasions I see the world with child-like, naive eyes believing there is good in everyone." How beautiful!

It was nice getting to know a little more about you, Becca.

I'm with you on the not growing old gracefully. I've never acted my age and never will :).

Hi Gail, I detest mirrors and cameras. There are times when I catch a glimpse of myself and can't believe that older looking woman is truly me and I hide whenever my Hubby gets the camera out. LOL If I don't "see" myself, perhaps my body will believe I'm as young as my mind is telling it I am.
And I'm afraid I have to admit to being rude on occasion -- when I see someone shove in line in front of the elderly or mistreat them, I just can't help myself.

Hi Laurie,
That person on the card was ME!!! LOLLOL
About Tom - I would have brought him home, but Butch (my lovesick duck) and Tom would have fought over me. Besides My Hubby would have been jealous.

Hi Patricia,
I do think we would all be better off not to look in the mirror and just go with the feeling in our hearts. Thanks so much for coming by.

Hi Anne, We need to form a new society for the Prevention of Acting Old. LOL I make it a point to always embarrass my son and the grands by acting like a kid whenever we go out. Walking along the curb with one foot on the curb and one foot on the street (does everyone remember doing that as a kid?), skipping, telling dumb elephant jokes, or playing Beach Boys music very loud. LOL

Way to go, Rebecca, kicking and screaming. I hope the grandkids keep you young with needing a playmate. And if you want to feel good about yourself, you can always visit a turkey farm. :)

I love the turkey story. He must have just loved you. Do you think maybe he just sensed your love of animals and wanted to show his appreciation?
Lordy, I hate to hear people curing on their cell phones especially if I have my little niece with me. People addicted to cell phone talk are often oblivious to the living reality around them. On an icy road I had trouble getting my car to stop without putting on the breaks. A woman in a gigantic SUV never stopped at the 4 way stop and almost hit me (inches to spare) because she was talking on her cell phone. It makes me nuts.
Loved your blog and learning some cool factoids about you, Rebecca.

Hi Sarah, I think you've hit the nail on the head about cell phone addicts. They are sooo in their own little world, they don't realize what's happening around them. And if they aren't talking, they are playing those games on them. LOL
No wonder the number of auto accidents continues to rise. Of course, I'm that way about the computer sometimes, but at least I'm stationary.

Hi Rebecca,

I really loved the turkey story, like everyone else--I think you need to write that up and submit it to Chicken Soup next time they have one ot their animal lovers volumes. That is really unusual! AND COOL! I loved getting a little insight into your personal life--and I love the idea of not growing old gracefully--you are so lucky to have grandchildren to keep you young! Great post--I really enjoyed this!

Hi Cheryl, I will have to write that one down and submit it somewhere. LOL Maybe I could work a lovesick turkey into one of my romances.
And your day will get here for the grands - they do make you feel young again, if they don't wear you out totally.

That's what I'm doing right now... kicking & screaming all the way (particularly screaming, since the torn ligament in my knee kinda prohibits me kicking very hard). We have a lot of other things in common, too. Thanks for a very interesting contribution!

HI Lou, I hope that knee gets better soon -- then you can kick with the rest of us as well as scream. LOL Thanks for coming by.
