Miss Mae Modern? Hush Your Mouth!

Posted on February 17, 2011 at 1:00 AM

With this article, I do wonder if I more-or-less reveal a hefty ballpark figure as regards to my age. However, if there is one thing said about Miss Mae --or maybe two things said-- perhaps three -- um, where was I?   Anyway, I decided to share a secret with the whole blooming world!

What is it, you ask?

Well, Miss Mae is a pioneer woman!   Okay, maybe not that much, but can anyone in today's computer-electronic-gizmo oriented-fast paced society know what the below photo is?

A hint: It is not a telephone pole!

Another clue, and yes, homemade by my craft-skilled hubby:

And what is its purpose, you ask?

It serves thusly:

Ah, you're getting the "picture", aren't you?

Yes, my secret is --Miss Mae airs her dirty laundry! (actually, it's clean laundry, but you know...)

Is there anyone else as old-fashioned as myself that still prefers the ways of your mother, or grandmother's days?

Riddle: What did the sheet say to the towel?

Ahh, Miss Mae,
What memories the clothes line brings! No, I use a dryer now, but I have a friend who still uses a clothes line. Okay, you'll have to tell me what the sheet said to the towel.

HI MM,
I knew immediately what this was and I still hang out quilts, blankets, and pillows to "catch an airing" as my grandma taught me. (I can't hang out all our clothes because of the allergens they collect) I love the smell of sunshine in my bed clothes and hang them out when the pollen count is low.
Could the answer to the riddle be "Oh dry up?" LOL

I recognized it immediately as a clothesline. Oh, those were the days. When I was growing up, my younger sister and I had the job of hanging out the clothes and bringing them in--most of the time. Oh, such joy when we just got the clothes up, and a big ol' West Texas sand storms boiled up! Many times we brought clothes in that were frozen stiff. Did you know the clothesline is making a comeback? Yep. Celia

Oh Miss Mae, I love reading your blog posts! I knew that picture was a clothes line but I do not have one. My grandma lives next to me and she does have one and sometimes I borrow hers. It makes my clothes smell so good! :)

And, I give up. What did the sheet say to the towel?

Great post as always MM. To start with I wasn't too sure, but then of course I recognised it. I think it's rather sad that so many people rely on a machine to dry their clothes these days. Yers, I use one myself in the wet British winter - but in the summer (or what passes for summer) I take advantage of every sunny day (even though there may not be that many of them) to hang my washing out in the fresh air.

And may i saywhat beautiful surrounding syour washing has to air in, and how lucky you are to have such a handy husband. (Ok mine will do the washing himself (in the machine, not by hand) but it would be very handy to have what looks like a 'mounting block' (you know everything with me relates to horses!:)) to stand the clothes basket on!

I have a clothesline in my backyard, but no stand to set the basket on. :( Maybe I can find or make one.

There's nothing like the scent of line-dried clothes. Besides, using a clothesline provides a great excuse to spend some time outside. :)

Ah the fresh smell of laundry hanging in the sunshine. IT does smell so good when it hung on the line.

Hi Gail!
Thanks so much for coming over! :) I do admit, on those cold days when the north wind freezes my fingers while I'm trying to pin the clothes on, I so wish I had the luxury of a machine dryer!

And the answer to the riddle will be posted tomorrow! :)

Hi Becca!
I know you're busy, so it thrills me that you took a minute to leave a comment -- thanks so much!

Yep, just gotta love it when you're sleeping on those fresh sun-dried sheets and that heavenly aroma fills your nostrils! Ahhh....sheer bliss! :)

LOL, Oh no, Celia, NO FUN when those sand storms dirty up the clean laundry! Ugh! But now that you mention it, I think I've read about folks returning to a clothes line -- they're a great "green" feature!

Thank you so much for stopping by, my friend. Appreciate it! :)

Hi Destiny! :)
Well, if your grandma has a clothes line and you use it, that's awesome of you! I don't know, there's just something satisfying about looking out your window and seeing those clothes flap in the breeze. You get a good, homey feeling. I'm so glad you're able to appreciate that. :)

And come back for tomorrow's answer! LOL

Lyn, I have to hand it to Dave who can do his own washing. Mine would be lost! LOL Yes, he can do the dishes, but he wouldn't know where to start with a washing machine. :) But give him a hammer and scrap of wood and he can build almost anything. :)

Thank you so very much for leaving a comment, my beautiful English friend. :)

I love hanging out sheets and bedspreads on my clothes line. Our kids used to help when they were younger and we used to put more on the clothes line when I had my helpers. LOL

Definitely a way to save energy plus have wonderful smelling laundry!

Those stands are handy. Yes, maybe it IS good exercise to bend from the waist and reach for those clothes when the basket sets on the ground. BUT, as we gals "mature", we lose interest in that exercise. "Just make my life a bit easier, please" becomes our motto! LOL

I'm so glad you still use a clothesline. We don't need to rely on electricity when we have those around! :)

Thanks for commenting! :)

And Diane, do you remember when diapers were cloth and you'd see clean diapers waving off the lines? Boy, NOT that I'd want to return to washing diapers! LOL It's nice to save the clothes line for sheets and bedspreads. :)

Thank you for coming by! :)

HAHAHAHA Too cute. I don't air my laundry for the simple fact that I hate the way it comes back smelling like dust. :O)

You mean clotheslines are outdated. I still hang my clothes out in the spring and summer, to keep from heating up the house, besides the fresh scent.

What did the sheet say to the towel?

Answer: "Well, I'll be hanged!" Or, "What are you doing hanging around with me?"

Oh, MM, thank you for this sweet trip down memory lane! It was such a joy to go out to the yard with my mother and help to hang out the clothes. I still have our old clothes pin bag, that wrapped around her waist and tied in the back! (My nephews could not believe that this was actually the way laundry used to dry.) Like everyone has mentioned, there's nothing like that 'just-off-the-line' smell :-) Thanks for another wonderful post. Hugs, Regina
