Doggy Tales -- We All Love Pepper

Pepper came to us when she was around three years old in 1942 and we had her for another ten years.  Mom took many photos of friends and relatives and many of them included Pepper.  Pepper always went with me as we explored our 21 acre farm together.  She stuck close because the cows didn’t like her and she regarded me as her protector.  Once she killed a snake and became my protector.  She shook the daylights out of that snake.  Mr. snake didn’t stand a chance.  As you can see in the photos, she never knew a stranger.  Although she didn’t see some of my relatives very often, she acted as though she had known them forever and sought out their affections when they came visiting.

Pepper and Larry as young boy.

Pepper plainly shows her affection for Mom and the

feeling was mutual.

In fact,

Pepper loved us as a family.  Notice, she is having me shake her paw,

something she knew how to do when you asked her to 'shake hands'.

Pepper

didn't mind sharing the spotlight with King but she had the spotlight all to

herself even without trying.

Pepper never had 'stranger' in her

vocabulary.  Here she is affectionate to Cousin Peanut who didn't

get down very often to see us.

Pepper enjoys a photographic moment with 'Sis', my half-sister, who traveled down for a visit.

Pepper is enjoying some loving from Cousin

Mitzi.

Thank you, Lisa. It was fun growing up with Pepper and sharing her with my friends and relatives. I had a photo of Pepper actually posing for Mom's camera but I've been unable to find it.

Looks like Pepper is a Miss Showoff. She was a gorgeous dog! And there's nothing I like better than vintage photos. Thanks, Larry.

Thanks, Khristine and Celia. It was tough keeping her long hair looking nice. That wasn't always the case as she loved to wade through streams and mud. Tough on long hair. Yes, she seemed to sense the camera was something to pay attention to.

Thanks for sharing the photos and story of a beautiful dog whose personality just shines through. I've been blessed with two dogs in my life and now enjoy a 16-year-old granddog. A life without a dog to love somewhere along the way would be a life with something missing.

Awww, Larry,

Thank you for sharing those wonderful pictures.
What a beautiful dog Pepper is, and what great photos of everyone. I once had a small dog that was quite a protector. She killed a snake in the creek near where we used to live and brought it to me. Ugh! I petted her and praised her, but I couldn't get rid of that snake fast enough.

Hi Linda: Yes, I agree on having a dog. I've had lots of dogs down through the years. I have my daughter's dog, Roscoe now and he's 13, doesn't get around very well but he's an affectionate fellow.

Hi Gail. Your dog obviously knew she was presenting you with a trophy worth keeping. Mom told me how excited I was when Pepper and I got home and I told the story of Pepper killing the snake. She said I couldn't talk fast enough to tell it. So long ago and I can't remember a lot of it.

Glad to see you here, Rebecca. Yes, Pepper and I went everywhere together except when I took off on my bicycle. Thank you for the special comment about Mom. She was part indian, long black hair, cheek bones, all the features of grandma Beasley where she got the indian blood.

Miss Mae, thank you for having me. The comments from all the visitors were really great. Digging these photos out and looking at others brought a flood of wonderful memories back. You have a great idea here for a segment on dogs.

Thanks for coming by, Diane. Yes, Pepper was a wonderful dog. I can't remember if we had her prior to 1942 when she was three years old. Mom probably said but I don't remember. That's the year we moved from northern Indiana to this area.

Miss Mae, thank you for hosting Larry and Pepper.

Larry, Pepper is the spittin' image of my late dog, Abraham who disappeared Thanksgiving Day 1998. Abraham was a joy. He was ready to play ball-- rain, snow, sleet, or heat. I'd throw the rubber ball hard against the ground to bounce it high. Abraham leaped for it and caught it mid air most of the time.

He had the sweetest disposition--the most obedient dog we ever had. Though I have two sweet lab-mixes, I still miss Abraham.

One rainy night, my husband and I drove up the hill toward the carport to find Abraham standing in the downpour, the ball in his mouth. Hubby looked at me and laughed, "Looks like you'll have to play ball."

LOL. Abraham would rather play ball than eat. I've had several sweet dogs since then, but Abraham holds a special place in my heart.

Do you think when I reach the pearly gates, Abraham will be waiting with that blue rubber ball in his mouth?

Hi Laurie: Yes, apparently water spaniels or cocker spaniels have a wonderful disposition. Pepper had two tricks: shaking hands and I believe she would sit when I told her. As you can see from the photos, she loved everybody, from immediate family to relatives she only saw once in a great while. They all seemed to be drawn to her too as she was to them. Thanks for coming by.
