Doggy Tales -- One Weird Bug

ONE WEIRD BUG

In the winter in Georgia someone always says, “Our weather isn’t cold enough to kill the insect eggs and larva.”

We had an unusually frigid winter last year, and I saw more bugs this past summer than I’ve seen in years. One particularly fascinating insect appeared on our deck while we had a house guest. I first heard it fling itself into the sliding glass door in our living room. It sounded as though a baseball struck the glass. Our guest sat in front of it.  I jumped and looked at her. She shrugged her shoulders, but said nothing.

A few nights later we turned out the lights to get ready for bed, and I heard a loud, staccato clicking outside. Our guest said, “It’s that bug.”

“What bug?” I asked.

“The same one that banged into the door the other night. When you go to bed, and I'm here on the sofa I hear it. It makes that sound. Pull back the curtain and look. It spins around."

I peered outside. A lime green insect about the size of a butterfly spun around in circles with its wings folded vertically and made the weird noise.

“I’ve never seen anything like that.” I gazed at my husband, Rick. “Where did it come from? Any ideas?”

He stared at the bug and shook his head. “I don’t know. It must be doing some sort of mating dance and call.”

I peered at our guest. “The bug’s in love with you.”

We all laughed and went to bed. But when the guest left, the bug left.

Winter is upon us again. It won’t be long until I hear someone make a comment about the frigid weather killing bugs.

What a great story Gail! Many bugs are actually quite cute, its a pity they have such a bad press. Some people say I'm crazy, because I actually quite like spiders, I will never knowingly kill one. Even the tiniest insect is a living creature, and as longas they're not doing any harm, I say 'live and let live!'

You are an original, Lyn. :) There sure aren't many folks like you! But I agree -- many bugs (and spiders, even though they make me shudder!) serve a very useful, and needy, purpose. As long as they don't bother me, I try to stay outta their way too! :) Thanks for stopping by, my dear friend. :)

Hugs!

Hi Hywela, Miss Mae and Patsy,
We were quite fascinated with the bug on your deck this past summer, especially the house guest.
Hywela, my husband is the same way by spiders. He just doesn't like to kill anything, but our daughter insists that there be no spiders in the house.

Cute story, Gail. Did you ever find out what kind of bug it was. Was it a Cicada? (We call them Katy-dids). LOL

Hi Laurean,
We called them Katy-dids too where I grew up, but I don't think this was one. I'm not sure what it was. It had its wings pressed against its body, and it was standing upright spinning around. It was hard to tell.
