Recipe from Mom

Posted on August 31, 2010 at 1:45 PM

Yesterday while sorting through my recipe box, I found something totally unexpected:

This is from my mom. It's a recipe for how she made Hardee's biscuits.

Mom died in 1996, and though there's always some kind of memory I have of her daily, this was especially poignant. I guess because it's written in her hand. For some reason, in that lightning fast moment, I felt really close to her. And a flood of emotions hit.

I remembered how she took great pride in her cooking, and enjoyed "laying out" a feast for her family and friends.

I remembered seeing her standing at the stove stirring five pots at once.

I remembered how she canned in the summer so we'd always have good food to eat in the winter.

I remembered her laughter.

I remembered her selfless love.

And I also remembered how August 27th was her and Daddy's wedding anniversary.

The handwriting on that piece of paper is shaky, evidence not only of her third grade education, but also of her failing health in her latter years.

You know, I don't cook much like I used to. When it's only hubby and me now, I don't see the need for a full fledged meal.

But, for some reason, I suddenly got a hankering for hot, fresh-from-the-oven Hardee's style biscuits.

What memories we have of our mothers, Miss Mae. Your post brought tears to me eyes as I remember my mom who died in 2005. She was a good cook, learned from Grandma Beasley. In later years she was unable to cook due to health reasons. I don't remember establishing a password with your site. I'll see if it posts without one. Larry

Thanks for leaving a comment, Larry. :) Seems our Moms and Grandmoms were always good cooks, weren't they? :)

Yep, you did have a password when signing up. Hopefully, you wrote it down somewhere handy! :)

HI MM,
I still have my mom and we made her country fried steak and gravy with biscuits for dinner today as Hubby had a hankering for it. We do this together now as she is slowly getting past the point of doing much cooking. It's funny that she and I both talked about my grandmother and the wonderful cat head biscuits she used to make while we were working and then you posted this. Lovely tribute to your mom.

It's so nice to suddenly be reminded of something so dear and precious to you. I'm glad you found that recipe. I come from a family of good cooks too.
I have fond memories of cutting and chopping for my mother. And, I have the recipes. I just don't use them that often. lol

I know, it works out that way some times, doesn't it, when the very things we discuss happen to be what someone else is discussing? That sounds like a yummy dinner you prepared. How lovely that you and your mom were able to work on it together. :)

LOL, I know what you mean, Gail! I have oodles of recipes and think, "boy, does that sound good!", but I just can't seem to get a "round-to-it" to ever cook anything! :)

BTW, I thought you had a photo in your profile. Or did I just imagine that? LOL

Oh, I bet. And her hands got so arthritic, I imagine it hurt for her to write.

Coming in here very late. Isn't it asuch a poignant moment when you come across something that brings back memories like that! My mother died when I was ten years old so I have very little of her to remind me, but my sister and I were brought up by my father's sister, 'Aunty Grace' and I still have the odd recipe or piece of prose in her handwriting tht brings memories flooding back. I still use her recipe for rich fruit cake at Christmas.

Hi Lyn,
Your aunt sounds like a very special woman with a large, giving heart. :) It's good that sometimes we find an item that jerks us back in memory to those earlier days. Those were the times that defined us, I think, and the people back then the ones who helped to shape our character. It's only fitting that we should never forget them. :)

Thanks, Donna. Yes, though she's now physically gone, she's always near in my heart and mind. :)

I loved your mom so much. She was always so sweet to me. I don't know if you knew this, but she and I shared an interest in cooking and baking , especially "fancy" cakes. She gave me several cookbooks that I still use. Every time I use one, I can hear her voice and see her smile. We were both blessed with wonderful mothers! Love you, cuz

Hi Cynthia!
Thanks for sharing that about Mom. No, I don't think I recall about you enjoying to bake "fancy" cakes. I know Mom loved those! Yes, she was a fantastic cook, and I'm so glad you've kept those cookbooks.

Great to be in touch again, Cuz! :)

Love ya,
MM
